In response to a surge of children and mothers fleeing violence and migrating to the United States, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has opened and expanded detention centers in recent months. These “family detention centers” are problematic in a number of ways, and are a practice long condemned in case law and by the administration in 2009. Family detention is immoral, puts young kids in a prison-like situation, impedes immigrants from access to proper healthcare and legal services that may save their lives, and puts multitudes of stress on mothers.
The New York Annual Conference JFON program stands in solidarity with JFON sites throughout the National JFON network that will go to Dilley, Texas on May 2, 2015 to protest the opening of the largest family detention center in the country. More details here.
